Australia 3 – Japan 1, you bloody little rippa. Guus for PM indeed, and I’d pay good money for a TV angle of Guus for the five minutes after Japans “goal,” as the only part I saw was a three second cut back to the Aussie bench, and Guus being bodily restrained by coaching staff as he looked around for someone to choke to death. Alls well that ends well, and our game can only get better from here. Let’s revel at being the underdogs for once.

Oh, I love this; from the Mainichi:

Shunsuke Nakamura had given Japan the lead in the 26th minute with a cross that beat Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.
His cross from 25 meters sailed in over Schwarzer, who failed to grab the ball when he crashed into a group of players in front of the net.

YEAH! THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED!

豪州のGKシュウォーツァーは12日の日本戦後、この試合のエッサム・アブデルファタ主審が、日本の得点場面で誤審があったことを認めたと語った。

中村のクロスをGKと競り合った柳沢にファウルがあったというもので、ロイター電によると、「試合中に僕が主審に聞きに行ったら『自分の間違いだ。申し訳ない』と言われた」という。審判が試合中に自らの判定の誤りを認めて謝罪することは極めて異例の事態といえる。

エジプト人の同主審はさらに試合後、豪州のビドゥカ主将に対し「豪州が勝ってくれて、神様に感謝している」と話したという。これが事実なら、日本の得点後の判定の公平性にまで疑問を抱かせることになる。
